 Product Reviews

  1. Very nice hingeless USA album.

Posted by Stan Ross on 23rd Jan 2019

Overall this album set is of excellent quality. Each space has the appropriate Scott # which in my opinion is mandatory for the serious collector. The pages are not numbered which I like because they can be arranged to taste, or removed altogether if deemed redundant etc. For instance, I put all "back of the book" pages in separate binders (one binder for Duck stamps another for everything else).

I was pleased that the most issues were presented in one format (ie blocks of 4 and strips don't have separate spaces for singles and sheets of 50 don't have 50 single spaces to fill (except for the 1976 state flag issue, which for some reason has both formats).

One caveat I encountered is that the mounts are closed vertically which makes it impossible to mount stamps with top or bottom selvages, unless the selvage is folded under which I hesitate to do on high-value issues. In some cases I carefully removed the mount and inserted new mounts of desired size.

All coil issues have spaces for both singles and pairs. Strips of 3 or 5 are not presented in the standard pages that I purchased.

I've found that the large souvenir sheet pages are subject to opening unexpectedly while turning pages. This can be solved by moistening a spot or 2 on the mount flaps and fastening them to the album page. Of coarse by doing this you lose the ability to see the info beneath the sheet including the catalog number.

Overall I consider this album quite comparable to the Lighthouse USA hingeless albums. The difference between the two is mainly the binder system. The Schaubek system utilizes a 6-hole punch format in a spring- open ring binder. The advantage of this system is that it is very easy to add pages, move pages etc. The disadvantage is that the binder is subject to having the rings "sprung" so that they don't close cleanly. So far I haven't had this happen as the spring binders do seem to be of good quality. Included with each binder was a peel-off label: United States (gold lettering on black background). There is a need to follow up with supplemental labels for year dates etc.
